As I traverse the familiar empty road, which was formerly decorated with bright lights from the previous month, I am reminded of the fleeting concept of time. Days pass by quickly and do not wait for anyone. Such a reality is endearing and frightening simultaneously as it can signify periods requiring either good or bad changes that demand adjustment. Whatever kind, life teaches us to maximize time and make the most out of opportunities to grow and flourish.
For many, the celebration of Chinese New Year marks not just the start of a new year on the lunar calendar, but also the perfect time to shed the weight of the past and step into the new year with a renewed sense of purpose. Although we cannot erase our past mistakes, the Lunar New Year, or the arrival of spring, is a profound reminder that there is always a perfect opportunity to begin anew.
From our childhood storybooks, spring has always represented transformation and regrowth. Plants begin to grow while flowers start to bloom. Some animals return from hibernation, and people could spend time outside again. This Chinese New Year, let us revisit and recalibrate by reflecting on what transpired during the previous year and modify our goals and intentions accordingly.
As a well-known Chinese proverb goes, “The perfect time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second best time is now.” We must not wait for another perfect time since this Lunar New Year is an ideal time to set new goals, pursue new paths, and foster meaningful relationships and deeper connections. The season of spring brings forth new possibilities, offering opportunities to try new things but also allows us to let go of unhealthy habits or even people. It can depend on whatever an individual needs at the moment.
Therefore, as we bid farewell to the chill we felt in December, we are greeted by the warm vibrancy of spring that ushers in new possibilities. Look out for bright hues of red adorning houses and restaurants; they are quite difficult to miss. You may also spot people carrying simple and small red articles—hoping to attract good fortune and energy. You may do the same or simply reflect and embrace this season of regrowth and renewal internally.
As the days grow longer and the air gets warmer, let us try our best to open up and start fresh. The celebration of Chinese New Year is not merely a festival for the Chinese, but it is also for all the people who want to start on a clean slate. As we turn the page to a new lunar year, let us welcome the arrival of spring and remind ourselves that it is never too late to begin again.
