Aiming to deepen the understanding of electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation and its management, an educational seminar for Level 4 Nursing students was conducted last October 18 at the Florence Nightingale Hall of San Martin de Porres Building.

Dr. Florimond Joseph M. Garcia Jr. is an Interventional Cardiologist and Fellow of the Philippine Heart Association, as well as an alumnus of the UST College of Nursing. He is recognized for his expertise in coronary interventions and active participation in international cardiology conferences. As the primary speaker of “ECG Essentials: From Theory to Nursing Management,” he provided an in-depth discussion on the interpretation of various ECG readings and their clinical implications.

Complementing his lecture, registered nurse Ms. Chelsea Nicole P. Pineda, a dignified alumna of the University of Santo Tomas College of Nursing, elaborated on the nursing management of patients exhibiting cardiac abnormalities identified through ECG results.

In the seminar, the students gained an understanding that an ECG is a diagnostic tool used to record the electrical activity of the heart, playing a vital role in detecting cardiac abnormalities such as arrhythmias, myocardial infarction (MI), and other heart-related conditions. They also recognized that proficiency in ECG interpretation and corresponding nursing interventions is essential to ensure early detection, prompt response, and effective management of patients with cardiovascular problems.

Overall, it underscored the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical nursing application, equipping students with critical competencies in cardiac monitoring and patient care.
