USTCON Seniors elevate learning experience with Safer & Innovative Practice on Intravenous Therapy

The Level 4, Batch 2024, UST College of Nursing Students had a great opportunity in broadening their knowledge and skills on Intravenous Therapy by attending a training workshop. The event was held on August 16, at 8:30 am, for Blocks 1, 2, 5 & 6, while it was on August 17, at 1pm, for Blocks 3, 4, & 7. Both events were conducted in the Nursing Auditorium, at St. Martin de Porres Bldg.

"Safety and Innovation Intertwined: An Introduction to IV Therapy" was the training workshop hosted by the UST College of Nursing in partnership with B. Braun and Aesculap Academy.

This workshop was intended to instill among the graduating nursing students awareness about the innovative IV Therapy devices available in the current nursing practice. Likewise, it also values the elevation of safe nursing skills and practice by grasping the proper handling of these devices.

The program started with a prayer followed with the welcoming remarks delivered by Ms. Quennie Hernandez, Product Manager on Infusion Therapy.

For the main event, it was divided into two sessions. For the first session, it was a lecture led by Mr. Francis Marie O. Singson, MAEd, LPT, RN, an alumnus of the UST College of Nursing who is a Clinical Specialist in Infusion Therapy.

His discussion highlighted topics on different types of IV Therapy risks, Safer Medical Devices, and Safety Level Hierarchy.

"Safer medical devices must be used consistently to reinforce the culture of safety." Mr. Singson emphasized as a takeaway for the student nurses to inculcate.

The second half was a hands-on session with the different nursing innovations. All students were able to experience handling the B. Braun medical devices by going through all four stations. Each station showcased various devices that would improve the care for patients during IV Cannulation, IV infusion, Drug Administration, and Chemotherapy Administration.

The program came to an end with a final message from the Level 4 Coordinator, Sir Dennis S. Cuadra, MAN, RN, who expressed his gratitude to the educational partners and for a workshop that was successful and full of insightful lessons that would be beneficial to Level 4 students as they embark their journey as graduating Thomasian nurses.
