4th year Nursing Students hold Advocacy Seminar and Workshop

Last November 28, 2024, the 4th year students of the University of Santo Tomas - College of Nursing held their Advocacy Seminar and Workshop entitled, “TOTES: Turning Old Threads into Eco-friendly Solutions,” at the Albertus Magnus Auditorium. Led by members of the RLE 3 and 4 of the batch, the environmental advocacies of waste reduction and recycling were addressed by upcycling old clothes and sacks into reusable tote bags.

During the seminar, Professor Moises Norman Z. Garcia, PhD, a professor from the UST Department of Biological Sciences, graced the premises with his informative and persuasive brief lectures on the pressing environmental issues of today. Matters of global environmental scares caused by pollution and unsustainable practices, importance of Sustainable Development Goals, and the negative impacts of the fast fashion industry to the climate crisis were explored and analyzed in his one-hour talk. Consistent throughout his seminar as well was the urgency to address the excessive consumption of textile wastes and the growing need for its reduction.

Following the formal discussions, RLE 4 students of section 4NUR-5 led their fellow batchmates with the innovative workshop. Here, the participants for the said activity were tasked to create tote bags from using an assortment of fabrics and used clothes along with threads and other sewing materials.

In culmination of the activity, a runway modelling segment was enjoyed by the students as representatives from RLEs 1 and 2 showcased their tote bags, flaunting their own creative styles and touches in producing and promoting sustainable fashion.
