Around 150 participants from the UST College of Nursing took part in "We Bear Cares" — the Nursing Journal's segment for this year's nursing week— held last November 19, 2021, from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM.
Inspired by the award-winning game show 'Jeopardy,' the activity aimed to highlight knowledge from different disciplines outside the field of nursing, such as journalism, literature, Filipino, culture, and the arts.
"The academic excellence of the studentry will never eclipse its collective creative talent. This is apparent in this year's Nursing Week, where all of the activities set forth are the product of the shared talent of the student body," Editor-in-chief Christian Miranda remarked as he opened the program and hosted it alongside Associate Editor Leah Morales.
The participants were already randomly assigned to ten teams before the start of the game. An icebreaker through the classic "Bring Me" was done to determine which team would go first.
A representative of each group was tasked to select a category and an item with corresponding points. Each team was given ten seconds to answer their chosen question.
A correct answer gives the team the points of the chosen item. An incorrect response, or failure to give one, provides the opponent teams with an opportunity to steal and answer and subtract the point value of the chosen item from the team's existing points.
A Daily Double round spiced things up where only the team who chose the category or amount that coincided with the Daily Double round could play. If they answered their question correctly, then they will receive double the points of their selected category.
After all the teams had answered, a 'Final Jeopardy' round concluded the program. Each team gambled all their points and was given 30 seconds to answer the ultimate question.
Team Craboo emerged victorious with 800 points, a 300-point lead from the second placer, Team Icebear. Team NomNom and Team Charlie shared the third spot with 300 points.
The second runner-up won a free dedication or literary piece from the Nursing Journal's literary department. The first runner-up won a free animated icon or portrait commission from the publication's art department. The grand winner received a P1000 coupon from Angel's Pizza and Tien Ma's, sponsored by Ralph de Jesus, a member of The Nursing Journal.
In her closing remarks, Morales hoped that the event served as the audience's starting point for their journey in seeking more knowledge, truth, and excellence.
"Let us remember that as nurses, we are bearers of knowledge, and as bearers of knowledge, we have the responsibility of empowering our clients, colleagues, and ourselves," Morales mentioned.
