UST Nursing Students launch AklatHalina: Unang Kabanata

Around 157 zoom participants and 115 Facebook live viewers participated in the first chapter of "AklatHalina," headed by the Streets to Schools organization as part of the University of Santo Tomas College of Nursing's Nursing Week 2021, held virtually last November 19.

Organized by the Nursing Central Board of Students (NCBS) and the UST Nursing Journal, this program aims to take a stand in the advocacy "Ladders for Literacy," which empowers literacy to children through efforts and talents of the nursing students from the UST College of Nursing.

In the first segment of the webinar, the first speaker, Mr. Qjiel Mariano, a 3rd-year college student of the UST-CON, introduced his "Ladders for Literacy" and "Streets to Schools" programs’ active participation for change and emphasized the importance of education to children.

Mariano presented how the projects intersect the Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being for the conventional rights of a child. He highlighted that "Children have the right to be born, Right to be informed, Right to education, Right to health care, and the Right to all the necessary means."

"An individual's unique stories may be shared with the world, especially with the children, thus as Thomasian Nursing Students, we have the opportunity to start small with our given talent and share our stories with the world," remarked Mariano.

The second speaker, Mr. Rey Bufi, a storyteller, an inspirational speaker, and the founder of "The Storytelling Project," encourages every individual to spark hope, inspiration, and imagination through storytelling.

Bufi advocated for Storytelling and Writing stories for children, emphasizing the importance of the 3T's: the Telling, the Tale, and The Talk. These guide storytellers on conceptualizing and conveying a lesson to the children who are reading stories. He also demonstrated how to read to the children--without a book--just by using his voice and facial expressions to storytelling.

The two-hour event focused on the two speakers' presentations and their advocacies for children aligned with SDG 3. Students also had the opportunity to interact with the speakers through an open forum.
