US Thomasian Nurse Leads ECGWorkshop for Level IV Nursing Students

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

An educational webinar on electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation was held on October 11 and 14 for 4th year nursing students at the St. Elizabeth Hall in the San Martin de Porres Building.

The webinar, “Understanding Essentials of ECG Interpretation and Management,” was led by Asst. Prof. Jhordin James C. Montegrico, a certified medical-surgical nurse and nurse educator. Montegrico is a UST Nursing alumnus from Batch 1993 and is currently teaching at the University of North Carolina.

A hybrid set-up was organized using Zoom to facilitate the webinar with technical assistance from UST CON faculty members.

The session covered cardiac physiology, the best practice standards in ECG monitoring, nurses’ role in managing dysrhythmias, and ECG tracing interpretation. The different ECG waveforms were discussed, including sinus rhythms, atrial rhythms, and ventricular rhythms.

The students were provided with printable handouts containing a 5-step method for ECG interpretation, samples of ECG tracings, and corresponding nursing management. Montegrico then opened the floor for questions before concluding the webinar.

The plenary session lasted nearly 3 hours before the RLE groups gathered accordingly to their assigned rooms for their workshop. The workshop consisted of assessing different patient scenarios, determining the kind of dysrhythmia according to the given tracing, and identifying the appropriate nursing actions for the abnormality.

The RLE groups were evaluated by their respective clinical instructors. The student nurses’ results from the workshop and evaluation will comprise part of the Medical-Surgical Lecture grade for the Preliminary Period.

One of the programs under the UST Nursing International Relations and Programs (USTCN-IRP), the webinar was organized to equip students with ECG knowledge to use and practice in critical care, emergency settings, and specialized areas to supplement their Related Learning Experience.
