Torres wins AORN Journal Writers Contest

Associate Professor Gian Carlo Torres emerged victorious at the 2022 AORN Journal Writers Contest for his study “Systematic Review of Preoperative Patient Readiness,” held at the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Convention last March 20, 2022, in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

The Level III Chairperson authored the article together with Dennis Fernandez, RN, MD, Leila Ledbetter, MLIS, and Prof. Michael Relf, PhD, RN who served as his research mentor during his stay as a visiting scholar to the Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) last 2019. The article was published in the AORN Journal in July 2021.

The competition is held annually to give recognition to authors of the highest-quality studies published. All articles included in the AORN Journal last year were eligible. The winning articles were determined in accordance with the points given by the journal editors and members of the editorial board. The award is conferred based on the article content, editorial quality, relevance to perioperative practices and patient care, and use of visual materials.

“I can say that this award is something very meaningful to me and my work as a nurse and researcher. Being recognized by colleagues and experts in the field of perioperative practice validates my ‘hugot’ to continue to advocate for our preoperative patients,” Torres said. Part of his advocacy is engaging the patients in meaningful interactions in addition to preoperative patient education to promote surgical readiness.

The PNA Department of Public Affairs Chairperson perceives the accolade as a win not only for himself but for fellow young Filipino researchers as well, considering it was granted by a US-based organization.

Various papers centering on perioperative nursing have also been published under Torres’ name, including the promotion of postoperative patient compliance through preoperative video presentation, the differentiation of preparation and readiness through preoperative assessment of readiness tool, and the development of a surgical readiness model.

The full article can be viewed in the July 2021 edition of AORN Journal, Volume 104, Issue 6.
