UST Nursing expressed its warm welcome to Ms. May Richelle Arellano Cestina-Parsons, the world’s first ever nurse to administer the COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, August 22, at the Elizabeth Hall of the San Martin de Porres building.
In Parsons’ opening remarks, she uplifted the mood of the student nurses as she encouraged them to become the best example of what a Thomasian Nurse can be.
“The Thomasian values and upbringing at the College will sustain you, like it did to me. The pride in the work that you do makes such a difference in your performance. You have to enjoy what you do. You have to feel fulfilled to sustain this job,” she stated.
The event revolved around the Question and Answer portion between Parsons and the students. One question raised during the event was how she, as a Thomasian Nurse, would inspire students who experience challenges that make them reflect on wanting to pursue nursing.
“You will always face challenges in any day in your lifetime. There will always be bumps on the road. The difference is how you get up from the bump, how will you react, how will you deal with these challenges, and you shouldn't let it stop you. Keep going,” urged Parsons.
“She [Parsons] upheld the three Cs of the university as a Competent, Compassionate, and a Committed Thomasian Nurse until the end. She not only shone but illuminated – she is imbued with unending grace,” concluded Dr. Carl Balita, President of the UST Nursing Alumni Association Inc.
The event ended after the awarding of the Certificate of Appreciation co-presented by Dean Escolar-Chua, College Regent Rev. Fr. Julius Paul Factora, O.P., RN, JCD, and University Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Louie Coronel, O.P.
In July, Parsons received the George Cross medal in the United Kingdom from Queen Elizabeth II and the heir apparent, Prince Charles. The George Cross is the highest civilian honor given in recognition of “acts of the greatest heroism or the most courage in circumstances of extreme danger.”
Parsons graduated from the UST College of Nursing in 2000.
