UST The Nursing Journal Layout Editors Chelsea Nicole Pineda and Mary Martie Durana secured the college’s first ever grand prize title at the 5th SIMBAHAYAN Bartolome De Las Casas Community Development Poster Exhibit Contest.
The two emerged as Grand Winners after their poster entitled, “Husay at Puso” bested out entries from more than 10 participating colleges. The title was given in a virtual awarding ceremony held last Wednesday, June 29.
The winning poster depicted a nurse’s pair of hands gently holding that of the patient’s, surrounded with various photos illustrating the college’s community development efforts this past academic year.
Pineda, the publication’s outgoing Layout Editor, said that their entry was inspired by nurses in Brazil who improvised gloves and made them the ‘Hand of God’ to comfort the critically ill COVID-19 patients in an isolation ward.
For Pineda, the hands “show how nurses’ “malasakit,” “pagtatalaga,” and “kakayahan” are vital factors towards building a resilient community and that they emphasize how the nurse is “with” the patients, holding their hand as they thrive and achieve their goals for the community amidst the pandemic.” “Truly, even if the pandemic [has] put a stop [to] everything, Thomasian Nurses never stopped caring,” Pineda remarked. The posters were judged based on the following criteria: embodiment of all approved community development/advocacy/service-learning projects, clarity of the poster message, creativity, relevance to the theme, originality, and visual and human interest. Moreover, the People’s Choice Award was also given to the entry with the highest number of heart reactions seen on the exhibit’s official Facebook page. The titles First Runner-Up and People’s Choice Award were given to the participants from UST Junior High School, while the Second Runner-Up title went to the representatives of the College of Science. Asst. Prof. Jayson Punzal, the college's Community Development Chair, also played an active role in the designing process as he assisted the duo in creating “Husay at Puso.” The poster exhibit contest has been an annual activity sponsored by the UST SIMBAHAYAN since 2017. The said event intends to showcase the University’s finest community development initiatives. Now on its fifth year, the contest’s theme is about “Wagas na Biyaya: Tomasinong Naglilingkod na may Malasakit, Pagtatalaga, at Kakayahan” (Unending Grace: Thomasians Serving with Compassion, Commitment, and Competence), and the focus being “Malasakit, Pagtatalaga, at Kakayahan tungo sa Matatag na Pamayanan sa Panahon ng Bagong Normal” (Compassion, Commitment, and Competence towards a Resilient Community in the New Normal).
