Int’l exchange program pushes student nurses to achieve national aspirations

Twenty students from the University of Santo Tomas College of Nursing attended an international exchange program organized by Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU), last August 16 to 18.

Offering cultural insight into various nursing practices, the three-day inbound student exchange program was conducted through a series of Zoom webinars.

It consisted of 10 lectures about nursing education, care of older people, and COVID-19 management. Professors and experts from HKPU, including Kevin Leung, Justina LIU, and Ming Fen Tsai, facilitated these webinars.

Alexa Taay of 3NUR9 stated that she realized how the Philippines' healthcare system needs improvement.

"I saw how much they are able to incorporate and put value into technological advancements into their care, especially with their safety promotion for the elderly units," stated Taay.

Shanaine Escal, another participant from 3NUR4, shared the same sentiments on how the Philippines needs to keep up with its Asian neighbors.

"[We should] expect more from the government, especially noong diniscuss kung paano hinahandle o nahandle ng Taiwan 'yong COVID-19," said Escal.

According to Ritzmond Loa, International and Relations Chair of the UST CON, the program's main objective is to understand how geriatric nursing works and attain cultural awareness.

Student participants were selected to attend the exchange program after submitting an online form provided by the International Relations and Programs of the UST CON. This program is the first exchange program organized by HKPU for nursing students and faculty held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
