Capped and pinned: CON recognizes Batch 2024 as student nurses

Juniors from Batch 2024 were officially recognized as Thomasian student nurses at the Capping, Pinning, and Candle Lighting Ceremonies on August 25.

The College presented 253 third year nursing students to receive their caps and pins as part of their welcoming into the nursing profession.

The ceremony was held at 1 p.m. for Blocks 1 to 4, and 3:30 p.m. for Blocks 5 to 7. Both events were conducted at San Martin de Porres Cinematorium with College Secretary Genecar Pe Benito as the Master of Ceremonies.

“Like Florence Nightingale, who had to bring a lamp in her nightly rounds among the sick and the injured, so much the more that they nurses be beacons of light to their patients,” Pe Benito stated in her welcoming speech.

In the first session, the petition was led by John Edward Cruz of 3NUR2, while Angelo Urfano of 3NUR7 spoke on behalf of the second session’s attendees.

“I believe that we are all more than ready to be direct providers of care and assistants to other people as long as we continually live by the core values of both the University and the College,” Cruz declared.

The vigil lamp was lit by Karl Abunda of 3NUR1 and Shane De Leon of 3NUR2 in the first session. Filip Pio of 3NUR6 and Gleizel Molina of 3NUR5 lit the candles of the second session’s participants.

After the imposition of the caps and pins, Aaliyah Dimalanta of 3NUR3 and Cyra Sabal of 3NUR6 led the Nurses’ Capping Pledge of their respective sessions.

The student nurses sang the UST Nurses’ Hymn, conducted by Kyle Guerra of 3NUR4 and Leander Sadural of 3NUR6. Gwyneth Feliciano of 3NUR3 and Maeveen Usana of 3NUR7 played the Hymn on piano.

Kixiah Jorge of 3NUR4 and Reichelle Urquico of 3NUR7 wrapped up the ceremony with the Closing Prayers.

The Capping, Pinning, and Candle Lighting Ceremonies signify the students’ full acceptance of a nurse’s responsibilities and duties to care for human lives.

Traditionally held during sophomore year, the Ceremonies were postponed because of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
