THE PULSE KEEPERS: SENIORS EMBARK ON ECG WORKSHOP

The Level 4 students of University of Santo Tomas (UST) College of Nursing, true to its commitment to growth and learning, attended the yearly ECG workshop spearheaded by the Medical and Surgical Nursing Department at the St. Elizabeth Hall of St. Martin de Porres Building, with sections 1, 2, and 5 on October 16 and sections 3 and 4 on October 19. Its theme, “The Pulse Keepers: The Critical Role of Nurses in ECG and Arrhythmia Detection,” aims to solidify students’ learnings on the alterations in circulation/hemodynamics as well as help them understand the significance of ECG interpretation as a vital skill in the critical care nursing.

The program was divided into two parts: (1) an interactive discussion with the esteemed speaker and (2) breakout sessions with the students’ respective clinical instructors. The first part was a 2-hour lecture by Mr. Paul Oliver Vergara, RN, MD, DPCP, DPCC, a cardiology clinical consultant at the Philippine Heart Center who was also an alumnus of both the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and the UST College of Nursing. His discussion tackled the basic steps of ECG monitoring, its interpretation, and the roles of nurses in recognizing, preventing, monitoring, and managing arrhythmias. This was followed by  an open forum to enlighten the participants regarding their possible queries about the topic. In the second part, facilitated by the clinical instructors, all the Related Learning Experience (RLE) groups were assigned to a particular room, in which they discussed a specific case scenario involving an ECG interpretation along with corresponding assessments. Here the student nurse participants were tasked to manage the said case as a way to apply what they learned in the activity.

The activity concluded with a reflection from the Level 4 chair, Asst. Prof. Dennis Cuadra, MAN, RN who emphasized that practice makes perfect in ECG interpretation alongside a closing remark from Assistant Dean, Asst. Prof. Maria Glenda Lee G. Sevilla, MAN, RN who stressed the importance of pursuit of excellence in one’s future nursing career.
