To equip student nurses with the skills and knowledge to respond to life-threatening emergencies, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) College of Nursing recently held its annual Basic Life Support (BLS) Training for Level 4 students last September 2 to 5, 2025, at UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery Life Support Training Center.

The 4-day training was facilitated by certified BLS instructors from the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery Life Support Training Center, accommodating four related learning experience (RLE) groups per day.

The program started with presented educational videos from the American Heart Association, and tackled different concepts related to BLS, including the chain of survival, proper procedure of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of automated external defibrillators (AED), and the significance of immediate intervention.

Following the discussion of each BLS concept, participants were divided into groups to undergo a return demonstration using CPR training mannequins and AED trainers under the supervision of their instructors

Through an application designed to enhance CPR training, student nurses performed high-quality CPR for adults and infants while viewing their performance metrics, including their compression rate, depth, recoil, and ventilation. As part of the evaluation, participants needed to attain a passing score in order to proceed to the next topic of the training.

To highlight the significance of proper compression and rhythm, the said return demonstration incorporated different lively and popular songs with 100-120 beats per minute, such as "Golden" from the soundtrack of the movie K-pop Demon Hunters and "Salamin, Salamin" by P-pop girl group BINI.

By the end of the program, the participants' knowledge of the different skills and principles was evaluated with a 25-item written examination consisting of questions drawn from the BLS concepts discussed.

Upon completion of the training, student nurses were to receive their Online BLS Provider License, valid for two years. The annual BLS training organized by the college for its Level 4 students is aimed at its commitment to produce competent and compassionate nursing graduates prepared for a higher level of the profession.
